5 Things To See In Birmingham

I wanted to visit Birmingham, a city on a few „most boring cities in England / in Europe / in the world“ lists, two years ago when we visited Stratford upon Avon to find out more about Shakespeare. We didn’t make it to Birmingham in the end but it stayed on my want-to-see list.

Luckily it’s not a long journey to get from Liverpool to Birmingham so when I managed to score a cheap bus ticket, I skipped all the Haloween partying and I was on my way to the most boring city at 7 a.m.

To be honest, I don’t think this is a city that is worth a longer than a one-day visit if you’re only interested in the center and anything in a walking distance. On the other hand if you are interested in architecture (or you just like pretty houses), Birmingham has what you’re looking for.

1) Selfridges

The main reason to visit and probably the most famous building in the city. It’s beautiful, breathtaking and I could look at it for hours. For me the best way to observe it was in the morning, when the sun started shining through the fog. Sitting in Starbucks, eating the most mainstream breakfast I was enjoying the least mainstream view.

2) The Library of Birmingham

When it comes to modern architecture, Birmingham is definitely not afraid of it. I was there on Sunday so the library was closed (although I don’t really see the logic in it) but the building itself is worth seeing even from the outside. It is the largest public library in Great Britain and according to the internet, 2,5 million people came to the library last year making it the 10th most popular visitor attraction in the UK.

3) Jewelry Quarter

The Jewelry Quarter is a part of the „European Route of Industrial Heritage“ and there are over 500 jewelry stores in this area, so if you’re not willing to sell some gold or buy diamonds, you’re probably not going to have as much fun as you could. On the other hand it’s a nice quarter of cute small houses, completely different from any other part of the city. You can also visit a Jewelry Quarter Museum but be aware that it’s closed on Sunday and Monday.

 4) Gas Street Basin

When you enter the canal basin area where the Birmingham Canal meets the BNC Main Line, it feels and looks a bit like a little Amsterdam. Although it is not far from the city center, you can find little pubs and people feeding ducks here and the peaceful atmosphere makes you feel like you’re as far from all the people living in Birmingham as possible. You can end (or start) your walk along the canals near The Mailbox, which is not only a shopping center but also the base of BBC Birmingham.

5) Victoria Square

A typical square with historical buildings that every city has to have. You can stop here when walking from Selfridges to the library or the canals and admire the Town Hall and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. I’d walked past this square at least five times when I was there so you can’t miss it J.

I spent the last hour and a half waiting for my bus at the coach station because there was nothing else to see or visit. It's a nice city but I think one day in Birmingham is enough if you're planning to go there, haha.
