9 Must-See Places in Dubai | Spend the day in Old Dubai

Tradiční architektura, místní vyhlášené trhy, „souky“, vás uchvátí svými vůněmi koření, leskem zlata, všudypřítomným shonem a typicky arabským smlouváním o cenách i množství zboží.

The traditional architecture and renowned local markets - souks, will enchant you with the smells of spices, shiny gold, endless rush and typically Arabian way of bargaining the price of anything and everything.

It’s a completely different world compared to the ultra-modern city centre where everything is the largest, tallest and luxurious but it’s exactly what makes Dubai interesting. And what are the places you shouldn’t miss in Old Dubai? Let’s dive right in.

1.  Gold Souk & Spice Souk

The markets with gold and spices are very well-known and although it might not look like it from the outside, once you walk into the labyrinth of narrow streets of the Gold Souk, all those glittering jewels will take your breath away, because speaking for myself (and probably most of you as well), I’ve never seen so much gold in one place. They say there’s more than 300 jewellery shops and even this part of Dubai managed to get one title - the biggest gold ring ever made was made here in 2000.

Spice Souk, on the other hand, will let you know it’s near pretty soon and the combination of smells will unmistakably lead you to the alleyways lined with all the spices you could imagine, so take a deep breath, take it all in and choose your spices to take away!

TIP! Whether you decide to shop on any of the markets, it's an unforgettable experience. We bought some spices and teas, which I think is a great thing to bring home - it brings back the memories and you can enjoy the smell of the markets in the living room. Plus the tea selection is completely different to what you'll find in shops in Europe so you can bring home something unique.

2. Dubai Creek

The boats will take you across the Dubai Creek from the Gold and Spice Souks to the markets on the other side, this time with cashmere scarfs and traditional products. It's the easiest way to cross the river and you'll also enjoy the authentic experience :). When you're done exploring the markets, you can either cross the river back or walk a bit further to see the Al Bastakyia quarter.

TIP! Don't hesitate to take the boat ride, it's definitely not a tourist trap and it's really cheap. One ride will cost you just 1 AED (approx. 0,25€).

Al Bastakyia is a historical part of Dubai, which was originally built in the 19th century as the home of wealthy merchants since Dubai Creek was a lucrative place to work, trade and live. Today, the buildings are refurbished and you'll find cafés, galleries and shops in the area, get lost in the narrow alleyways and rest in the courtyards in the shade of palm trees. Compared to the constant bustle and opulence of the city centre, Al Bastakyia is a complete oasis of tranquillity. Enjoy the contrast and another side of Dubai, which won't let anyone forget about the foundations of this city.

4. Dubai Museum

We, unfortunately, didn't manage to include Dubai Museum in our plan, but if you have the chance, use your time to find out more about the history and about the growth of Dubai. The entrance fee is only 3 AED (approx. 0,70€) for adults and 1 AED (approx. 0,22€) for children and you'll want to look for the museum in the oldest building in town - Al Fahidi Fort.

TIP! You can also visit the Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum's House which is a nearby palace opened to the public. Entry is free and you can not only see the interiors but also artistic installations.

Dubai simly should not be just a stopover but it deserves your attention as an interesting city. Give it a chance for at least a weekend and visit not only the modern city centre but discover the older part as well, it's equally fascinating.

And if you've been to Dubai, let me know what you liked the most and what you'd recommend as a must-see! :)
